DOTA Presents...

Our campmate, Carter Emmart, director of the Hayden Planetarium in NYC presented Uniview in our dome this year.
scaling the universe

This software is amazing. Carter "flies" around the earth, using a direct link with NASA satellites, and can fly down through the atmosphere to almost any place on earth. He has a way of demonstrating the majesty and tender fragility of our home planet. To go on a trip with Cater is to realize how small we truly are, and at the same time, how much damage we can truly inflict. His goal is to present this software to children all over the world, so they may see their own homes in relation to the whole of the Earth.

We constructed a screen which we installed inside the dome, and were able to project Carter's software nightly. The presentation, accompanied by Bach concerto's, soon became a favorite haven for the weary and curious who rested their heads on Cameron's giant stuffed vine and leaves. We also screened silent films, anime and visually stunning cinema such as Baraka and Koyaaniquatsi.

Unfortunately the winds and dust finally ripped our screen and clogged the DVD player, but the computer and projector survived splendidly and we hope to renew the projections next year. No where else on the playa could you find anything like this and it was with great pride that we brought Carter's gift to Black Rock City.

Dave's Dome

Our 30 foot dome was made in 2003 by our dear departed brother Dave Kennedy, one of the most amazing souls ever to grace this earth. Dave had the amazing ability to know what you need and have it in his hand before you even realized that you needed it. You could say, "Wow, my double helix 2.47 cm reverse slide ratchet bolt just busted" and you would turn around to cry and there would be Dave, holding it in his hand. "Hey. I made one yesterday, you know, just in case we needed it." No lie!
Well, I had the honor of adorning and decorating the dome this year, along with my boyfriend. We have never done this kind of fabric installation before, and believe me, it's harder than it looks. Never the less, we got it done and it doesn't look half bad. I hope you liked it Dave!!! xoxoxoo

Rainbow Day

Here's a fun short video by Joel of the dust storm coming in ...
windy kites
You can see how fast it happens. Our friend Tim's amazing cursor kite is not made for these kinds of heavy winds.
After the storm a double rainbow appeared. Terry and I climbed to the top of the scaffolding.

What great memories! ;-)

A Harsh Mistress

Burning Man 2007 was grueling, ecstatic, harsh, amazing, exhausting and rewarding. My fave moments were watching the eclipse then seeing the Man burn. I was so happy to see it happen finally. Finally someone got the balls to torch Disney Man and send the organizers a message of our discontent at the direction the festival is going in. I hope they dont' procecute. After all, isn't this kind of thing what Burning Man is supposed to be about???
Being able to be with my playa family is the best thing about spending a week in 110 degrees. I love all my campmates and being with them is an absolute gift .
The double rainbow after the 3rd day of white-out dust storms was a sweet and cherished reward.
And teaching rape/sexual assault awareness classes all over the city was both a personal accomplishment and a very emotional experience.
It was a wonderful amazing year and I can't wait until next year to do it all again!

DOTA on the Beach

My fabulous Burning Man campmates met at Ocean Beach to fly kites, build fires and enjoy the gorgeous day. I love my DOTA family and every minute we spend together reminds me of how lucky and blessed I truly am. <3
Thanks to Biz for the photos!

Burnin' Ring of Fire

For a few years at Burning Man, a black car with painted flames drove around in the mornings blasting “I fell into a burning ring of fire” sung by Johnny Cash at very high decibel levels. Strange enough, that’s the song that most strongly reminds me of the experience being in BRC-- waking up to the absurd and annoying but welcome and hilarious sounds of mariachi trumpets blaring the intro to that song in the blinding heat of a brain addled morning- over and over again.

Last year I had the good fortune of hearing the story behind this song on NPR’s “This American Life.”

When Johnny Cash and June Carter met, they were each married to other partners. June was singing with her family, the Carter’s, the most respected and influential family in Country music at the time. Johnny, an egomaniacal and reckless speed addict, walked up to the devoutly Christian June and whispered in her ear “I’m gonna marry you one day.” June scoffed at the audacity of the big jerk.

After a time, June ended up singing back up in Johnny’s band. It was then that she fell in love with him, hard and uncontrollable, and was, at the same time, consumed with guilt. She is the author of this famous song… and “the burning ring of fire” refers to the pit of hellfire that she feared her soul was going to be plunged into because she, a married woman, was in love with a married man.

She kept this love a secret and gave the song to her little sister to record. Johnny heard this rendition, a sweet and sedate recording, and he had a dream that night of a mariachi band playing behind him. He recorded it immediately--with June, her little sister and her very staunch Christian mom singing backup to this song June wrote about her illicit love of a married man. Knowing this certainly makes my listening to the song a different experience.

Well, eventually June and Johnny did marry. June found herself in the difficult position of trying to deal with Johnny’s drug habits and late night boozing. When she finally recorded the song herself, it’s a very plaintive and bittersweet voice accompanied by her auto harp, sounding weary of this burning ring of fire that she had gotten herself into.

Johnny kicked his bad habits finally and the two of them went on to live a long, joyful and loving marriage together. The program featured another song, one of the first songs that the newlywed couple recorded about their love. In it, June sings prophetically, “and if I should die before you do, and I have a feeling that’s the way it’s going to be…”

Later that day I also heard an interview with Rosanne Cash, Johnny’s daughter by his first wife. She had just released a new CD, (which is incredibly beautiful, BTW) of songs she wrote trying to deal with losing her father, her mother and her step-mother, all within 2 years. It’s a wonderful personal tribute to her richly musical and legendary family. You can hear the interview at:

Kites of DOTA

DOTA is the Black Rock City Department of Tethered Aviation, my freaky family from all over the world who gather each year at Burning Man to create art, chaos, hang out and, most importantly, fly kites. This is a tribute to the kites of DOTA over the years and the artists who make and fly them. (in no particular order at all)

Tim Elverston made this Cursor kite in 2005.

Mort and Ginny Linder created this steel kite sculpture in 2004 and it's become a camp icon.

Mark Ricketts built our mylar Spirit Kites in 2004.

Tristan models Ty Billings' tie-dyed kites.

The Red Line Project kite was designed and built by Dean Jordan, sewn by members of DOTA in 2005. This 200 sq. foot kite with a tail approaching a quarter of a mile has been flown many times in many places since.

Our Ghost kites were designed by Dean Jordan, built and sewn by DOTA members and flown in 2005 and 2006.

The Man- designed and built by Chris Shultz in 2006.

The Morpho kite, designed and built by Tim Elverston and Ruth Whiting.

The Red Line is launched at Marina Green in San Francisco.

The Red Line high in the sky.

Me flying the Man.

Morphos at sunset.

Ghost kites and the Man kite fly over Burning Man at night.
